Grenada downgrades Consular Office in New York

The Grenada government has closed the doors of its Consular Office in New York as it seeks to conform to international regulations regarding the appointment of a Consular General.

Foreign Affairs Minister Nicholas Steele said the office is being downgraded to an Honorary Consular Office following the appointment of Derrick James to the post of Honorary Consul.

(Reuters) - Hissène Habré, Chad's former leader, was arrested on Sunday in Senegal, where he has been living in freely in exile for 22 years despite accusations of political killing and torture during his time in power, a court spokesman said.

Seven African countries have reduced child HIV infections by half

(Reuters) - Seven countries in sub-Saharan Africa, have cut the number of new HIV infections in children by 50 percent since 2009, the United Nations AIDS program said on Tuesday.

The dramatic reductions - in Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia - mean tens of thousands more babies are now being born free of HIV, UNAIDS said in a report on its Global Plan to tackle the disease in around 20 of the worst affected countries.

Haiti reports first suspected H1N1 death

Haiti has reported its first suspected death from the H1N1 virus.

The victim was from the small community of Nan Bannann in the southern city of Belle-Ansecity, 110 km southwest of the capital Port-au-Prince. The victim died at a hospital in Thiotte, 65 km east of the capital.

Ghana arrests 161 Chinese suspected of illegally mining gold - deportations in process

Chinese citizens arrested earlier this week for illegal gold mining in Ghana are to be deported, a spokesman for the country's immigration service said last night.

Ghanaian authorities raided areas near mines where Chinese live and detained 161 people, the Chinese Embassy in Accra said on its website. They are suspected of illegally mining gold in the resource-rich West African country.
