African Development Bank to create infrastructure fund of $50 billion

(Reuters) - The African Development Bank said on Thursday the fund it intends to create to finance infrastructure investment on the continent could be as big as US$50 billion.

Ricin laden letter addressed to Obama intercepted - Secret Service

The United Nations Organization's efforts to tackle cholera in Haiti are "almost non-existent", a medical charity, Medecins Sans Frontieres has revealed, as the world body faces court action for inadvertently starting a cholera epidemic in the country.

(Bloomberg) - Nigeria’s central bank shouldn’t rush to cut interest rates even as inflation is forecast to remain within its target this year, Governor Lamido Sanusi said.

Haiti: Plane carrying U.N. peacekeepers veers off runway - no injuries reported

Police in Haiti say a Brazilian military plane veered onto the grass next to a runway of the capital's airport after one engine caught fire as the aircraft attempted to take off. There were no injuries reported.

Airport police spokesman Max Justin says the fire erupted as the plane was speeding down the runway Sunday and the craft ran into the grass. Fire crews put out the blaze. There were burn marks visible on the plane, and its front landing-gear had snapped off.

As a financial services hub, Botswana will not be a tax haven

As Botswana diversifies from it's largely mineral dependent economy into the establishment of a financial services hub, the southern African country is stepping up efforts to remove secrecy provisions and deficiencies in its tax information exchange agreements and laws in a bid to reverse impressions that the country may be a tax haven.

A company that monitors global Internet traffic says that the undersea fiber-optic cable connecting Jamaica to Cuba has come online.

Internet analysis firm Renesys says it detected the new traffic between Cable & Wireless Jamaica and Cuban state telecom monopoly Etecsa beginning May 13.

The Namibian government on Tuesday announced the first discovery of oil off it's coast around the Walvis Basin.

Rwanda: Dozens trapped, 3 feared killed in building collapse

Around 100 people are feared trapped after a four-storey building under construction collapsed in northeastern Rwanda, the government said Tuesday.

At least 30 people were injured, three seriously, in a suspected bomb attack Sunday at a packed new Catholic church in the northern Tanzanian city of Arusha, police said.
