Michael C. Butler defeats Paul Miller to become first African American mayor of Orangeburg, S.C.

Voters in Orangeburg have elected Michael C. Butler (pictured), as the city's first African-American mayor.

Butler won a four-year term with 53 percent of the vote. Mayor Paul Miller received 46 percent. Miller has been mayor since 2001.

Butler's new terms begin October 1.

Butler ran on a platform of revitalizing the city and working on economic development. He is a career specialist at the Technology Center in Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5.
