Namibia finance minister lowers corporate and individual income tax
Namibia's finance minister Tuesday gave corporate and individual taxpayers some relief by lowering taxes while announcing government expenditure increases of nearly 20 percent.
"The non-mining company tax will be reduced by one percent from 34 to 33 percent this April and another one per cent in 2014 to 32 percent," finance minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said while tabling the budget in parliament.

Pursuant to amendments to the Customs & Excise Duty Act (Kenya) gazetted on 1st February 2012, leading integrated communications service provider Safaricom has effected an upward review of its M-Pesa tariffs which took effect on Friday the 8th of February. U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Susan Hoover said the earthquake had a magnitude of 3.5. The epicenter was 27 kilometers northeast of Port-au-Prince and was relatively shallow at 10 kilometers deep.
The earthquake caused panic among some residents of Port-au-Prince who remembered the 7.0-magnitude monster that struck the southern part of

As the March 4 election date nears in Kenya, the latest opinion polls have revealed that the frontrunners in the presidential race, Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta are in a statistical dead heat.
According to a poll conducted by Strategic Research, 44.4 percent of voters said they would vote for Odinga while 43.9 percent said they would vote for Kenyatta.

Kenya has banned three marathon runners for doping offences, including the first case of an athlete using the banned blood booster EPO, the country's national athletics body said on Thursday.
Wilson Loyanae Erupe, who won the 2012 Seoul marathon in a course record, and Nixon Kiplagat were each suspended for two years while Moses Kiptoo Kurgat received a one-year ban, Athletics Kenya said.

President Barack Obama's approval ratings are at their highest since 2009, and and Americans prefer his economic message to that of his increasingly unpopular GOP opponents, according to a Bloomberg poll released Wednesday.
The results of the poll indicate that 55 percent of Americans approve of Mr. Obama's job performance, while 40 percent disapprove. Only 35 percent of Americans have a favorable view of the Republican party.
The same poll also revealed

(Reuters) - The head of Guinea's armed forces, was killed on Monday when the aircraft carrying him and five other top Guinean military officials crashed close to the Liberian capital Monrovia.
General Souleymane Kelefa Diallo, who was on a security mission to Liberia, was appointed by Guinea President Alpha Conde after the latter won elections in 2010 in the world's top bauxite producer.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 and depth of 110 km rattled sections of Trinidad early Sunday morning.
It is reported that the tremor was also felt in Grenada.
The Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre at the University of the West Indies (UWI) said the earthquake occurred at 1:27am local time (12:27am EST).
It said the earthquake occurred north of the Paria Peninsula in Trinidad.

President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill raising the government's borrowing limit, averting a default and delaying the next clash over the nation's debt until later this year.
The legislation temporarily suspends the US$16.4 trillion limit on federal borrowing. Experts say that will allow the government to borrow about US$450 billion to meet interest payments and other obligations.
The Senate gave the bill final approval last week

Amnesty International has called on Shell to pay US$1 billion to start cleaning up two oil spills in Nigeria's Niger Delta which it says caused huge suffering to locals whose fisheries and farmland were poisoned.
